*A papershredder works wonders when preparing the bedding for the bin – otherwise you can roll sheets of newspaper and use scissors to cut thin strips of paper. This forms tunnels and nice moving space in the bin. Big torn pieces stick together and will take longer to turn into compost.
*To speed up the process, cut the fruits and veg into smaller pieces.
*It is a good idea to pop fruits and veg in the microwave for a while to kill any fruit fly larvae, their eggs or dangerous organisms hiding. Let it cool before adding to the bin!
*Worms prefer Rooibos teabags. They move into the Rooibos apartements in a flash, mating there and laying eggs amonst the fine sticks. Other teas compacts, and don’t leave room for movement and relaxation!
*Crush eggshells by putting it into a plastic bag and use a glass container or wine bottle bottom to thoroughly crush the shells into very tiny pieces.
*Use the chalk you buy for cockroaches in the shops, around the base of the bin on the floor – this prevent ant infestation!
